Offered here is an exceptionally scarce and striking original Whitney Made Halloween postcard, featuring one of the most macabre and elusive designs by Whitney, and possibly the rarest and most difficult to find Halloween postcard, from one of the rarest sets of any Halloween series!
Printed in vivid pumpkin orange and black, the card depicts a silhouetted figure suspended from a gallows/scaffold above a dark architectural landscape, accompanied by the wonderfully dark period caption:
“Sometime when you're hanging around in this neighborhood, drop in.”
The reverse bears the distinctive “Whitney Made, Worcester, Mass., U.S.A.” imprint and retains its original one-cent Washington postage stamp.
This example was genuinely mailed in 1920. The sender hand-dated the correspondence:
“Lansing, Oct. 30 ’20.”
The postal cancellation appears to read October 31, 1920 — Halloween Day, although portions of the date are obscured by the printed postcard design and handwriting, so prospective buyers are encouraged to review the close-up photographs and make their own determination.
The handwritten period message to “Frances” discusses the sender's travels, an upcoming party, returning home Sunday, and visiting again shortly. The dated correspondence provides excellent period provenance and places the card firmly in use during the 1920 Halloween season.
Condition:
Overall, the card presents very attractively for its age with strong, vivid orange coloration and crisp black printed imagery.
Please note the following condition details:
There is a localized crease/soft bend extending inward from the right margin near the midsection of the card, together with minor rubbing and handling wear along that edge. Close examination suggests this is a crease/softening of the cardstock with a very slight tear, and there does not appear to be significant associated paper loss.
Additional light edge and corner wear, minor surface wear and other evidence of normal handling and postal use are present as expected on an original mailed postcard more than a century old.
The reverse is fully written in period pencil and retains the original stamp and cancellation.
No attempt has been made to clean, press, flatten, restore or otherwise alter the card.
Please study all photographs carefully, including the detailed close-ups, as they form an important part of the condition description.
A very difficult Whitney Halloween postcard with extraordinary visual appeal, strong period provenance and a possible Halloween Day — October 31, 1920 — postal cancellation.
