Arthur and His Knights Christine Chaundler Thomas Mackenzie 1920 Stokes HC
Offered is a beautiful and highly collectible copy of *Arthur and His Knights* by Christine Chaundler, illustrated by the renowned Golden Age artist Thomas Mackenzie and published by Frederick A. Stokes Company, New York.
Bound in the original decorative olive-green cloth, the book remains in exceptional condition for its age. The binding is tight and square, with no loose or missing pages, and the covers retain strong color and attractive original decoration. The spine lettering and illustrations remain crisp and well-defined. Only light wear is present at the extremities, consistent with careful handling and over a century of preservation.
Internally, the book is remarkably clean. The pages are bright and well-preserved with only light age-related toning. All eight full-color Mackenzie plates are present and accompanied by their printed captions. The frontispiece retains its original tissue guard. The illustrations display beautifully and are among the highlights of this edition. A previous owner's name is present, but there are no ex-library markings, stamps, or other significant detracting flaws.
Thomas Mackenzie is widely regarded as one of the foremost illustrators of the Golden Age of Illustration, and his Arthurian subjects remain among his most sought-after works. This volume presents the legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table in an attractive format enhanced by Mackenzie's distinctive artwork and decorative design.
Bibliographically, this copy is believed to be an early first American edition or first issue. The book is published by Frederick A. Stokes Company, New York, and retains the original publisher's binding. There is no later printing statement or subsequent publication date present, and the volume bears the printer's imprint, "Printed in Great Britain by T. and A. Constable, Printers to His Majesty at the Edinburgh University Press," on the final page. Additionally, the presence of the printer's designation "A" on the first chapter opening page is consistent with points often encountered in early Stokes printings of the period. While no explicit "First Edition" statement is present, these characteristics strongly suggest an early issue and possibly the first American edition published circa 1920.
A wonderful example of a scarce and desirable Arthurian title, combining exceptional condition, complete illustrations, and the celebrated artwork of Thomas Mackenzie.
