Antique c1920 Steiff Pick Spatz Wood Sparrow Bird Pull Toy Button Rare 5.75"

An exceptional and seldom-encountered early Steiff “Pick-Spatz” wooden sparrow pull toy, Germany, dating to approximately the 1920s.

Among Steiff’s distinctive early wooden toys, the Pick-Spatz was designed with a painted wooden bird mounted upon a delicate wire undercarriage and four green wooden eccentric wheels. When pulled, the unusual wheel arrangement gives the bird a characteristic animated, bobbing movement.

This example is particularly desirable for its remarkably well-preserved original painted surface, retaining strong yellow, cream, black and blue feather decoration throughout. Most importantly, the bird retains its original Steiff metal button mounted to the side of the head—an identification feature frequently absent from surviving examples.

The toy measures approximately 5.75 inches long and retains its original wooden wheels and wire chassis. The painted surface exhibits expected scattered wear, losses and evidence of age consistent with an authentic early children's toy, but remains exceptionally attractive overall. No attempt has been made to clean or restore the piece.

A scarce and highly appealing example of early Steiff production, particularly difficult to encounter with both strong original paint and its original Steiff identification button intact. An outstanding addition to an advanced collection of Steiff, early German toys, wooden pull toys or antique advertising and folk toys.
