Antique 19th c. Blacksmith Forged Bearded Hewing Axe Single Bit Engraved Leaf
An exceptional example of a circa mid-19th century blacksmith forged hewing axe. It is possible that it could date to the late 18th century (1700s), however, based on the style, I presume closer to the mid-1800s.
What makes this axe had a bit more unique is that the blacksmith took the time to engrave a leaf / branch pattern along the edge. In the square cartouche mark, it appears to be the blacksmith's initials, which are either AS, AP, or AR. Symbol is a bit hard to make out.
No cracks, chips, or repairs.
Had likely been re-sharpened by a previous owner at one point in time.
It weighs 2lb 5.5oz on my postal scale
