Original USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CVA-42) U.S. Navy service plaque belonging to Lt. James “Jim” Schernecker, who served as an officer aboard the aircraft carrier for four years.
The shield-shaped wooden plaque features a large, heavy relief metal medallion depicting the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt, aircraft, torch, and atomic-age motif, with “USS Franklin D. Roosevelt – CVA 42” around the perimeter. A brass plate below is engraved “1959–1962,” corresponding with Schernecker’s period of naval service.
The reverse retains particularly nice provenance, including an original photograph of Schernecker in his naval uniform, his handwritten identification “Lieutenant Schernecker,” and a period newspaper clipping reporting the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt returning home for decommissioning in 1977.
Schernecker’s published obituary further documents that he attended Marquette University through Naval ROTC and spent four years serving as an officer aboard the aircraft carrier USS Roosevelt before entering the Naval Reserves and later graduating from the University of Wisconsin Law School.
A great identified and documented Cold War-era U.S. Navy artifact rather than simply a generic ship souvenir. The personal photograph, name, service dates, and independent biographical documentation provide excellent provenance to the original officer who owned the plaque.
