Antique Primitive Folk Art Religious Wall Sconce Carved Saint Icon Candle Holder Santos Bishop

Offered here is a wonderful antique primitive folk art religious wall sconce or devotional shrine panel, hand carved from wood and depicting a bishop or saint figure wearing a mitre. The piece retains heavily worn original surface and paint remnants with exceptional age-related patina throughout.

The lower projecting element appears to have functioned as a candle arm/sconce support. Construction is entirely hand worked with a rustic vernacular quality consistent with devotional folk art pieces from Latin America or possibly Mexico/New Mexico.

Based on construction, wear, oxidation, wood shrinkage, and overall craftsmanship, the piece appears to date from the late 19th to early 20th century, though an exact age and origin are unknown. The hanging wire on the reverse is clearly a later addition, and some nails securing the candle support also appear to be later repairs or reinforcements, which is common for utilitarian devotional objects of this type.
