Wonderful panoramic country scene depicting sheep grazing among wildflowers beneath large trees, with a split-rail fence, distant village and church spires, mountains, and a dramatic sunrise breaking through the clouds.
The landscape is painted directly on glass and appears to utilize an unusual mixed reverse- and front-painted technique, with portions of the composition painted on the reverse of the glass and additional details apparently applied to the front surface. Housed in its substantial period gilt wood and composition frame with ornate foliate decoration.
The piece remains in as-found, unrestored condition and displays considerable age and character. There are scattered losses, chips, cracks and missing areas to the ornate applied decoration of the frame, along with wear, scratches and losses to the gilt finish. The painting itself exhibits areas of paint loss, deterioration, surface wear and discoloration consistent with its age. Please examine photos carefully for condition.
